Dari or Farsi (two languages)
Salaaaaaaaaaaaam,
Why do we say we speak Farsi?
Our language is Dari the Mother of Farsi, but why are we keep calling we speak Farsi?
Isn’t the time to do something about it?
Let me know your thoughts
Thanx

You know.. me too I say Farsi to make things easier for ppl to understand. And even out of habit. But as Chapandaz eloquently notes we shouldnt do this.
Farsi is a language specifically associated with Fars province in Iran. It is Iranian.
When we say that we speak farsi, we are in actuality saying that we speak a language that belongs to Iran, and not only that, we are saying that we dont speak that Iranian language properly. This opens us up for criticism from them.
The above is of course not true but thats what it implies.
Dari is a unique language, and as was stated, is in fact the mother of farsi. Farsi derived from it.
When the poets wrote, they never said they were speaking farsi (except for ferdowsi who said "basi ranj bordam dar in sal si, ajam zenda kardam bedin parsi")

You wont hear a Tajik saying they speak Farsi.. they always say Tajiki. Our language is much closer to theirs than to Iranian Farsi, so why do we say Farsi?
We should say Dari. Definately. 100%
