06-25-2005, 01:33 PM
^^^ Yah they only make you look fat if you yourself are a fatty :peace:. Whoops :shy:.

Btw, I'm not a big fan of saris either but if worn correctly and of the right material (chiffon or organza mainly), they look very delicate, feminin, and pretty :)

Hahaha we actually use saris to make curtains lol. They're really light and some have fabulous one of a kind patterns. Perhaps I'll take a picture of the ones I have in my room. The colour is absolutely amazing :)

Nah guy I dunno how much you know about interior decor but if you go to higher end stores, they're all selling what they call "sari curtains" and their prices are so high it's not even funny. They really do look amazing depending on your furniture and stuff ;)

I totally respect your opinion of not liking saris but I guess by applying your own mentality, Afghans should also stick to their own music and food and oh oh ohhhhhh perhaps country even :peace:

You see how dumb that kind of thinking really is sweetheart? Hope you won't jump down my throat like last time. Anyways,:kh:

ee chee jang o dawa shoud :| everyone has their own opinion and you should respect that... what's with calling names :huh1:

yeah i don't like saris either... if you're in india and wear it, that's fine, but anywhere else, wearing it would look like you're indian or indian-wanna-be.. but wearing other types of indian clothes, ONCE IN A WHILE is okay..

phy jan, eating indian food doesn't make you look like an indian. however wearing a sari does. ;)

wooo :shy: take it easy ladies...whats the big deal???..

i recently bought two sarees...they look damn nice in my opinion...kinda give u a classy look...but i dont see why u guys are against sarees when u go around wearing those other suits, pajama suits and all those other indian clothing i dunno the names of.

I have an uncle who is sooooo against indian clothing...movies..food etc...cuz he thinks our generation is deviating from our culture into indian culture....kinda funny though cuz our generation went through living a few years of our lives in either pakiland or india. So its to be expected...and i honestly would rather have myself or my sisters go towards the indian culture than that of caucasians...besides their fabrics and decor is out of this world!!

But i would have to agree with the ladies just a bit...u cant go overdoing something..if u show up to every party in an indian outfit it's a bit odd...once in a while it looks very nice.

and phy sis ur indian???...thats interesting..what brings u to afghanforums???

Ok here's the thing... i don't wear any kind of indian clothing... not just sarees. IF i were living in india or pakistan, then i would, becuz i would feel more comfortable looking like the majority cuz if you look different, then everyone would look at you (i'm talking about being in public)... so anyways, now since i'm not living in india, nor am i an indian, why should wear indian clothing?... if you want to dress more ba-hijab and stuff, why wouldn't you wear afghani clothes?... i think afghani clothes are a lot nicer than sarees... but that's just MY opinion and i respect everyone else's... everyone has their own likes and dislikes. As i said in one of my previous posts that it's okay wearing other types of indian clothing onceee in a while (as you maihan jan also said)... the reason that i'm saying that wearing otherr kinds of indian clothing is not as bad as sarees is becuz saree is just too indian lol.. i mean if you go to afghanistan, you'll see a lot of ppl wearing indian clothes but you can hardly see anyone wearing sarees.
Maihan jan, as i said, it's just my opinion.. i'm sure a looooooooot of ppl would agree with you.. one example would be my mom hehe.. she always tells me that i should get indian clothes cuz she likes them :kiddo:
ok i talked too much :shy:

so many complaining about saaris esp suraya jan-e icky mouth, and saying everyone should wear their own thing...

i agree, afghan guys wear perantonban, what about the ladies? what is afghan female clothing anyways? I have not seen any other than the afghan dresses which are mainly kochi derived clothing pieces with long dresses and they are basically in essence patches of cloth pieces multicolored sewn together like blankets in afghanistan and in the shape of a dress however by chance they had their own exhubarent beauty. way to go, i agree, there should be designers that make business suits out of those and casual other pants and such all with the colorful mixes and all the bells and whistles and mini mirrors. Now wouldn't that look great?

cause let's face it... Jeans = western, t-shirt = western, saari = indian, hijab = arabic (won't even get into arab debate as for afghan "islam's equivalent" = chaadari), short skirt = french, and all such designs should be out when we say ONLY AFGHAN... let's at least be consistent when even being judgmental by race and culturistic manners, don't you think? ;)

wow, couldn't you insult our tradition more?... it's really sad..
i was nice enough to not make fun of sarees becuz it's someone's tradition but now......
buy a few metres of fabric and wrap yourself lol (that's what it looks like, though now i see that it needs more effort than just wrapping).. i don't know how that's any nicer than afghani clothes :huh1: ... but okay it's nicer in YOUR eyes.. don't you think you didn't have to be disprespectful?

i'm afghan too ;) insulting tradition comment does not answer what i asked... it's a simple question, what = afghan clothing?

if you respond with enough information with factual basis, that makes it a fine question, however no response from anyone shows that we like to be ignorant and disrespectful to other traditions without having a sense of a clue about our own, in a sense making asses of ourselves and in the process insulting not only ourselves but our tradition...

and if you read my post which i admit is highly sarcastic in areas carefully you'd see that in no way am i comparing Saari or Afghani clothing, rather pointing out the gapping flaws in the ideology behind some peoples remarks here

Bibi_shereeni, sweetheart he's not insulting Afghan culture or traditions :). I don't mean to point fingers because quite a few of you guys share the same mentality but when Suraya said that she hates it when Afghans wear saris because it makes them look Indian or whatever else reason, that's a tad bit hypocritical. If that's really what you think, you guys should ONLY stick to wearing Afghan clothes and shouldn't even think about wearing pants, skirts, tshirts etc... because God forbid you start looking like a "faranghee" :o . I'd like to point out the sarcasm in that last sentence for those of you who might have missed it :). I do hope now that you might better understand where we're coming from

ash and me-crazy, if you are afghan and don't know what afghani clothing is, that's too bad.. maybe you should go to afghanistan and figure it out cuz i don't have time to explain it here... and yeah i don't think that you are gonna gain anything by kissing others' a**es and insulting your own culture.

2nd... like i said, and i repeat myself again.. if i were living in india, i would wear indian clothes and now that i'm in the west, i wear western clothing. simply becuz i don't wanna get attention.. there's a saying "khahee ke nashee ruswa, hamrang e jama'at bash"...
However, i don't care what you wear... why on earth should i care?... i said i don't like saree and i don't wear it... i was talking about myself.. i wasn't talking on behalf of everyone else.. and i repeadly said that everyone's opinion is different and i respect that... if you don't like my opinion, too bad, don't accuse me of saying something that i didn't say..i NEVER said that afghans are better (or worse) than others... i'm not stupid to make such a dumb comment... god, mara az ami forum teer!

Phy, you don't need to translate someone else's comments for me.. i don't think i need that but thanks anyways ;)

i want to apologize to indians for making the comment in my previous post about sarees.. i did not mean to insult your tradition, but someone forced me to make that comment.

The reason that i don't have time to explain it to you what afghani clothes is, is becuz you're an afghan and you should know it... if you were a non-afghan, then i would :)

Next time you are unable to explain, don't pass your excuse through a long sentence stating you don't have the time, as the time excuse runs thin when you have the time to post a long comment about your opinion and others kissing up to others, rather are unable to explain afghan history in very simple terms which would take even less time.

I am well informed of our history and culture and aware of culturilistic icons such as clothing and so forth. I said what I said very sarcastically to make another point, not attract hissy fits, and I said it because it's what's by the book true. Afghan female clothing is dresses made basically from many patches of clothes, in majority of areas but Kabul due to majority of Afghanistan being spread out small villages. This fact truns out to be very elegant and beautiful (if you were thinking to compare that to me "degrading" my culture, in comparisson, saaris in essence are simply fabric 1 piece wraps around a set of pants and top, and this goes for any other cultural related clothing anywhere). Then over time people began to evolve the clothing into better designed, more complicated patterns and better sewn as a result of coming into big cities that were slightly more "developed" such as Kabul due to the fashion savvy crowds. No matter what be the difference, not only Afghans state this but many that have an eye for fashion beauty state that the original design of mix of patches and different colors is what makes the dress extremely beautiful due to its wide range of orginality as most times no one dress came out the same as they were all hand made. This is the only thing that sort of combines the many provinces in Afghanistan bridging the intercultural differences including difference in wardrobes of the areas.

In Kabul pre mujahid/talib years, most of the designs worn were European clothing coming through some stores, and mainly for the state of the public, in the Leelami which is basically used clothes cleaned out very well into top used shape shipped out from many other nations including Canada and the US. There also was a handful of Chadari wearing ladies, however it was basically dependant of the age groups. The young mainly wore European styles, the young adults styling with a mix of fashion from all over but mainly europe yet again, and the older adult ages with the jacket shirt top, and long skirt along with a chadar, while people from non-rural areas mainly wear what is "culturally" Afghan (i.e. the butter selling farmers roaming through). I've lived half my life there btw so would know due to that as well ;)

Now if you wish to argue this, be my guest, will be waiting for a response.

I am not kissing any arses, nor am I insulting my own culture. If you had the ability to read and not blindly comment rather process the data prehand, you'd notice what my point is as shown below. And the only reason I am getting this much in this is not to compare Saari or Afghan clothing or any others for that matter rather the great insults thrown towards other cultures due to ignorance as THAT I see as far more degrading to Afghan people when individuals make comments that are stupid and ultimate examples of ignorance, and THAT I find insulting.

I in no way care what you wear or any others. I never went against your opinion of YOURself. I never asked where you live nor why you wish to dress the way you do.

PS: That chameleon principle is quite an interesting one that is a cheap excuse for this debate. Following that concept, what about Hijabs? All these people in the west shouldn't wear them because they are beyond doubt attracting attention? Let me guess, you were referring to a different sub species of the chameleon where their theory doesn't apply to this example?

My points about the afghan dress matter was not that in the west or india people should wear what the environment is wearing, but by the commentary regarding how Afghans should wear what is in their own culture, and by your great adaptation theory, Kabul and other Afghan cities and villages should be doing the same nah? wearing Afghan women's dresses all over? <-- see the difference? I await the great explanation of how that also attracts attention :P

My problem isn't with the clothing rather our big mouths. Want an example? What were you wearing when you were in Afghanistan ;) or Ms. Suraya jan? (that is IF any of you even have been in Afghanistan previously, and I ask for honesty, NOT swaying of the facts to match your argument)

Nor am I stupid to preach opinions from all and instead shoot down your personal opinion.

There is a huge difference between:

"I prefer to not wear any Saari's because they are too indian and not matching my environment"

"In my opinion people should stick to their own culture and their own values repelling anything else outside those borders"

Since the first is great and allowed by right and very much respective, while the second is passing an obvious judgement on others. Not because you state your opinion, rather because Afghans tend to single out India & Pakistan matters. What's pathetic is at least the ones that have been in Afghanistan and suffered from political means they have some reasoning behind the hatred of Pakistan. But when it comes to kids grown up in the west not having seen anything rather than happiness provided by their loving parents and top notch education and so forth, they still try to be "cool" by expressing hatred towards India and Pakistan when they know less than a Hippo.

Ok I just wrote so much stuff and my computer froze. I have to write everything again… k here we go again…
I’m not unable to explain. In the part of Afghanistan where I’m from, ppl dress pretty much like west, but in a more ba-hijab way.. like they would wear pants and a skirt on top of it.. not thick pants. And their shirts aren’t very tight (that’s how it was when I lived there and also right now). However, I believe that in the 70’s, ppl used to dress exactly like western ppl (I have seen in the pictures).

You need to calm down here. If you think it’s a “cheap excuse”, then that’s your opinion… I can’t say whether ppl should or shouldn’t wear hijab. It’s their choice.

Western clothing has become part of our culture. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing.. I can’t change that; it’s been like that for many years.

When I was in Afghanistan, I dressed like how I explained in the first paragraph (ie. like they would wear pants and a skirt on top of it…).. and that is an Honest answer ;) lol.

Yeah you’re right, but I didn’t say the 2nd quote, I said the first one lol.
Trust me janem, I didn’t grow up here, and yes I suffered a lot like most of us did. And yes I lived in Pakistan before coming to Canada. phewww, that toook a while to read....gulak oh bacha....do u sit there all night writing ur responses regarding sarees and afghani clothing???....and u criticize how much i write....geeek!!

anyhow, 1st and foremost i would like to point out that we ARE the best nationality existing and our country has the strongest and most brave people i have ever come across. Every country has it's good and bads..but generally speaking i believe our country is on the top...i'm afraid the level of development and infrastructure is not the only determining factor that i look at when stating this opinion. Zindabad AFGHANISTAN!!

And as for clothing...gulak...u as well as anyone knows that in afghanistan people dresssed in western clothing as u explained. That adapting into our culture is considered part of afghan attire in the country. The traditional afghan clothing is only worn in rural areas and has recently been nothing but a mere specticle for tourists...as u said...afghani clothing were patches of cloth sewed together to make a dress..there is nothing further left to say about it. Its been years that people have worn western style clothing in afghanistan and let's face it...western clothing is something universal..travel all around the world and u will see ppl in pants and shirts. I hardly call that copying from the west. Indian clothing on the other hand is exclusive to india, pakistan, fiji, bangladesh etc. I for one agree with these gals and dont want afghanistan to become part of those countries in attire. If one wants to style and wear a saree or a suit once in a while it's fine...but lets not make it a habit like some people have made it to be and stick to our afghaniat in the form that it has been thus far.

I don't know about the best nationality nor sure if there's such thing, as goes the saying "Har cha ta khepal watan, Kashimr dey" lol I dont doubt the patriotic love for country as every country-men should have it in thier hearts. If one wants to style and wear a saree or a suit once in a while it's fine...but lets not make it a habit like some people have made it to be and stick to our afghaniat in the form that it has been thus far.

maihan jan that's what i have been trying to say, but you explained it well. it looks fine on ppl once in a while but afghans are too much into the lifestyles, music, movies and basically everything of indians.

Sweetheart don't take this the wrong way but it seems to me that you're trying to justify ignorance simply because it comes from someone of your background :shy: . Who cares if it's on an Afghan message board? If anything, comments coming from YOUR people that downplay other people's beliefs or nationality on YOUR message board is worse. It's really none of my business but what kind of an image are you guys giving of yourselves to non-Afghans? Anyways, I find it truly disappointing to see such blatant displays of ignorance from people who I would have otherwise coined to be rather intelligent. To think that you guys (I mean people in our age group ;) ) might have been the ones to improve the way the rest of the world views not only Afghans but Muslims as well  . Oh well, I see no point in arguing about it. You guys probably know what's best for yourselves :) :kh:

anyhow, 1st and foremost i would like to point out that we ARE the best nationality existing and our country has the strongest and most brave people i have ever come across.

I am not too sure what you mean by justifying ignorance???...you find afghans insulting afghanistan and that bothering me ignorance?? If you are referring to the extent to which afghans hate pakis..thats a different story. I dont know why you guys find it so hard to believe that Pakistanis have never done good for afghans. This can be justified both historically and most afghans who have had the unfortunate luck of living in that godforsaken country can support the issue at hand. As suraya jan mentioned once before...take this very seriously and literallly...we have been cheated out of our rights while living in that country...been backstabbed by EACH and every paki we've ever come across...this i can assure you from personal experience...i have come across many...both in the 2 years i've lived in that country and all the paki "friends" i have had in the 14 years i've been in canada. Bottom line is, when we have hatred for a certain nationality...we have it with reason...and as these ladies have mentioned previously...there is no denying good and bad in any race/nationality...thus i will leave you saying...the day i meet ONE pakistani person who is truly good at heart with no ulterior motives...i will ask for forgiveness from god for thinking the way i do about these disgusting people we call our "muslim brothers".

btw..i do take into consideration what others think of afghans and i represent us as pakistani haters...there is no denying that!!!

actually i used to defend pakiz .. i mean for the 3 yrz dat i lived in paki... only the SPz were pain in the butt.. my neighbourz were kewl n very friendly :hip:

but i came here.. (nz) n i had a friend who turned out to be an oxymoron n this other lady who had sum serious mental problems and after dat pakiz arent my fav ppl.. thou i still have sum gud paki friendz ;)

btw.. i dun see wat this whole arguement is about... js coz sum1 likes indian clothes doesnt NOT make them afghanz.. i watch indian movies, listen to their music, n yum love their food.. same wid iranian n english... but i still call myself a proud afghan  so suraya jan n bibi sherin i really dun get where ur coming from

and phy dear.. itz great to have u in this forum, no matter wat race u are :respect:

qandolakem, my point is that pants and a shirt and dresses can be categorized into what afghans wear and have worn for years in afghanistan...but indian clothing cannot be..and hopefully will never be...

With no intention of disrespect to Phy who is indian...i personally love indian clothing with all the colors and fabrics...but i dont want it to be part of the afghan culture within the next generation..because we are starting to forget our own culture amongst all the turmoil

Peace

lol. Now I know that you Know better than this! You and I both know there is no such term as "Pakistani" if we go back tracing history. They are either Afghans or Indians. Dont generalize oh biader ;) your reply seems like "Khesht'e Awal Gar Nehad Ma'mar Kaj ------Ta (-***-)Merawad Deewar Kaj" lol the word in the blank. Oh and i like the Indian Cricket team as well ;)

And as far as preventing Indian culture from influencing the Afghan culture goes,we might be a little too late for that (to be precise about 18 centuries). From Buddhism (Statues Of Bamyian as their example) to items of clothing such as the Maatika and Chadar (veil not Hijab) and games such as chess and classical arts all are remainders of Indian culture.

Yes that's an obvious fact because we used to be a buddhist country before islam. Thats basically where afghans have their routes...in which case if our culture overlaps the indian culture it is still considered part of ancient afghan culture. The fact of the matter is that afghans wear panjabi suits as daily wear adopted from indians and pakis in the years we have lived there...this is escalating to the point where i went to an alll out afghani wedding this weekend and our great singer qader eshpari was literally singing more indian movie songs than afghani songs. Kind of made me wonder if we were at a indian wedding or afghani...such things i cant stand for because it will eventually mix in with afghan culture and our kids will be dressing, listening and will know more hindi than our own dari/pukhto.

Maihan sis, that's what i'm worried about too... i wish everyone could think that way and took it seriously.

AsH, for some reason i thought you were a girl, until someone said "he".. so, if in my previous posts, i said something like "you go ahead and wear saree".. i wasn't trying to be funny (i don't know if i said anything like that, but in case i did)...
and yeah thanks for wishing me luck, i wish you the same ;)

ps. i just found out that Phy is a guy too, so edited my post to mention his name too lol. so, phy what i just said to Ash about wearing saree, applies to you as well :)
