Issues and reset related information

As I'm sure everyone will have already realized, the forums are online after a 3 week offline period and albeit similar a ton of posts are missing (to say the least.

The cause for this downtime and more so for the missing content is a dispute of sorts with the accounting dept of the hosting services. In short, the old server was disconnected unexpectedly and everything from it wiped (a lot more gone than just the forums contents). The last backup I had that was not wiped out was of the last downtime period which was about a year ago (November 25, 2008). So what you see is everything from that date and before.

Sorry for the last year's contents missing, as I wasn't able to make backups over the past year (my mistake but it also is rather tedious for the database size) but the site is now hosted on a brand new server which is a lot more capable than any before and it should be good to go. ***

That last bit goes with some fine print relating to the finances required for having this place functional as it stands, so I'll expand on its details in the next few days as I've been sleepless long enough. Thanks for the understanding and wishing you all an enjoyable experience.

if i did get paid, it wouldn't be going offline. it was initially out of interest in helping people communicate etc, and now, i'm not sure actually why i run it; if i figure it out, i'll announce it.

unfortunately not. i'll be letting it make more regular backups than 1 year ones from this point on. the older server was put offline and suddenly removed without proper notice. there were some more important things for me on there that were wiped out too.

yap, people who have changed anything over the past year will either have to remake those or retrieve their passwords through the forgot password feature

if there's a good enough candidate then it'll be definitely considered. problem with this wasn't so much related to lack of people, rather the finances that aren't working out as mentioned in the top reply of this post

ya, hopefully old members use their own usernames, and no one beats them to it. if i had a way of verifying who's who then i'd change it but unfortunately that can't happen so life with the new usernames begins :)

Hmm, the technical side of things isn't as much of a problem; it just needs some maintenance etc. The mistake was in not getting it to create backups away from the server that it's hosted on and that just takes a bit of time to setup so I hadn't bothered. From this point on a monthly backup since it's a big database.

The monthly server costs is about $200 and the ads don't pay for that or come close. So I'm just forced to go back to creating the other few websites that used to run with this. If the ads pay for the server, then yay. Otherwise we'll figure out what to do then (a couple months away). As per the donation link, we've stayed away from that always and I'll try avoiding it still. I'll update the status of things here soon.

That was part of the problem. There were more important bills to pay but the hosting firm also made a mistake in their stupid accounting dept was the cause of the losses of data so its irreversible and we move on.
