Sonu Nigam survives a fatal mishap

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 21st 2005 - 1530 hrs IST

A couple of days back we had informed you that our Bollywood troupe is going to perform in Kabul in Afghanistan. And here's breaking news on the show's scenario. Indeed breaking!

The Indian team who were performing in Kabul just survived a fatal mishap. While singer Sonu Nigam was performing in front of some 50000 plus Afghans, the stage all of sudden collapsed. Sonu and his performance troupe just managed to save their lives and escaped with a few minor injuries.

But the strangest part is yet to come. Call it coincidence, telepathy or foresight but Sonu had predicted that something like this would happen even before the show had started. In fact on Sonu's suggestion and insistence the position of the dressing room was changed from underneath the stage to an outside location, little away from the stage. And television actor Hussain (Chirag of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) would be thanking God and Sonu for this as he was inside the dressing room at the instance when the stage collapsed.

Doors for Bollywood have opened now even in the city of Kabul, Afghanistan. Performing in front of 30,000 audiences will be Suniel Shetty, Sonu Nigam, television stars Rahul Roy and Hussain.

Afghanistan is a huge market for Bollywood and is very excited for this first of its kind show, informs the Indian organiser of the event.

Chaos at landmark Kabul concert

Sonu Nigam's concert ends as the stage collapses
The first major concert by a foreign musician in the Afghan capital Kabul since the fall of the Taleban has ended in chaos after the stage collapsed.
The star of the show, Indian singer, Sonu Nigam, was unhurt but other musicians were injured, reports say.

The reason for the stage collapse is not known but fans say it may have been caused by the crush of the crowd.

Earlier police beat fans outside who could not get in, despite having tickets, leaving many injured.

The venue was the stadium where the Taleban carried out amputations and executions of those guilty of criminal offences.

Disappointment

Around 10,000 fans from all over Afghanistan had arrived at the stadium by 1700 local time on Wednesday, four hours before the musicians arrived.

Correspondents say that the crowed cheered when the musicians appeared on the stage despite the delay. The excitement with which the Indian musicians were received was unprecedented.

Sonu Nigam - 'We Indians like Afghans'

The long-awaited concert was called off after the stage collapse, to the disappointment of the fans.

Some people argued that Afghans "are not yet ready" for such concerts, others were critical of the security forces for failing to maintain order.

"Afghanistan is still far from hosting a great singer like Sonu Nigam", one of the fans, 30-year-old Bashir Ahmad, told the BBC.

"The country and its people have spent many years grappling with war and isolation. It is difficult for them to give a proper welcome to foreign musicians."

"Things went wrong", another fan said. "But I hope Sonu Nigam doesn't leave the country with bad memories."

The singer had hoped to give a memorable evening to his Afghan fans.

"We Indians like Afghans", he said at the beginning of the concert. "It is the news of insecurity in Afghanistan that prevents Indians from visiting. But on my return, I will tell Indians that Afghanistan is secure and we can feel safe amongst Afghans." that soo sweet... :)

why the hell would he go to afghanistan to have a concert in the 1st place...there are still fundamentalists who deem such actions against their beliefs...afghans dont even feel safe leaving to go see their homeland let alone have a concert...He's lucky thats the least that happened to him

Dear Phy,

i don't know if you ever been in Afghanistan but one thing is clear that you still haven't realized that loughing at our tragidies is something that keeps us going; other wise we all would have bursted all these years under the rule of war.

True true. The fact that they allowed Music! that in itself is amazing. Good that he's alive. And I don't think we are ready for concerts just yet, heck we are not ready for concerts in Canada and U.S., Afghanistan needs a bit more time.
