The First Nowroz

According to my sources (which are semi-reliable) the first Nowroz took place at the court of Jamshed in Balkh, more than 4,000 years ago. It is recorded in the Shahnama:

ba farr-e kayaani yaki takht saakht
che maaya bedo gawhar andar neshaakht

ke chun khwasty, dev bar-daashty
ze hamun ba gardun bar-afraashty

chu khorshid-e taabaan mian-e hawaa
neshasta bar u shah-e farman-rawaa

jahan anjuman shod bar aan takht-e u
shegofti faru manda az bakht-e u

ba jamshed-bar gawhar afshandand
maraan roz ra roz-e now khwandand

sar-e saal-e naw hormuz-e farwardeen
bar asood az ranj o az dard o keen

bozorgan ba shadi biyarastand
may o jaam o rameshgaraan khwastand

chunin jashn-e farokh az aan rozegar
ba maa maand az aan khosrawaan yadgaar

(Translation)

With his royal power Jamshed created a throne
Inlaid with a wealth of precious gems

When he desired, the devs picked him up
And carried him from earth to heaven

There the Shah, whose word was law
Sat in mid-air like the shining sun

The whole world assembled around his throne
In amazement at his great fortune

They scattered jewels upon Jamshed
And they called that day Now Roz

On the first day of the year, hormuz-e farwardeen
(1st of hamal)
People rest from pain and trouble and fighting

The great ones & nobles were all gay and happy
(gay means happy)
And they called for wine, more wine, and singing

From that time, this glorious festival
Has remained to us as a reminder of the Shahs greatness

(Ferdowsi)

Happy Nowroz :)

Thats right dude.. I wanted to use gay in its original sense, cause I think the term has been abused too much by todays youth... hehe

Wassup dawg.. Hey that would have been interesting to see. Yeah I have some "adaptions" of the Shahnama, being read in a really pure & strong Persian accent. Its got a special quality about it.. hehe

Ash Jan..

My main man. I eagerly await your posting about the video thing.. before I draw myself into a battle of historical facts though, I would like to express my knowledge that Ferdowsi was a story teller, and the origin of Nowroz in actuality is probably slightly different :)

Despite being a hardcore gangsta till da day of ma death, who opposes most forms of literacy that arent directly related to drug sales, I must express my academic interest in such topics as the origin of Nowroz and other indigenous festivals that have been lost in the unfortunate process of cultural decay at the hands of such people as can be found at www.sunnipath.com

Also I must remember not to make future sentences as long as the one above.

Ive had a long day
