Daqiqi was one of the earliest dari poets, preceding Ferdowsi (who incorporated his Gushtasp-nama into the Shahnama). His place of birth isnt known to us, but we can be pretty sure that he was born somewhere in Khorasan, and was a poet at the court of the Samanids in the 10th century milady. In his Gushtasp-nama he talks about the coming of Zardusht (Zoroaster). I shall post that in good time. Besides the Gushtasp-nama he also wrote ghazals.
daqiqi chaar kheslat bar-gozida ast
ba giti dar, ze khoobi-ha wo zeshti
lab-e bijada rang o nala-e chang
may-e chun zang o kesh-e zardushti
(From good and bad, Daqiqi has chosen four things in the world:
Amber coloured lips, music of the lute, wine bright as the suns rays, and the religion of Zardusht)

thx for the info.. by the way that was a nice ghazal and also he had good choice.. like.. amber lips.. wine.. sun etc.. i think i had some of his poems back in school.. and yea we had lots of stories about ferdawsee's Shahnama and Gushtasp-nama..
In my opinion Ferdawsi was an excellent poet but not a very good human being.. cos he worked for money.. he sold all his life to Sultan Mahmood.. and finally died.. (We can say that he was servant of Sultan Mahmood? )..

I feel sorry for Ferdowsi, cause he started writing under the Samani dynasty. They were the first ethnic Tajik/Persian dynasties to arise since the Arab invasion that promoted Persian culture above Arab culture.. they traced their fathers back to the great ancient kings, before the coming of the Arabs, and encouraged the writing of ancient Persian mythology. This was completely opposed to the Turks to the north who were considered the Persians enemies.. but Sultan Mahmood, an ethnic Turk, finally defeated the Samanis and took power - and Ferdowsi was forced to present the Shahnama to him.
The great Zardushtis and dehqans who told their stories to Ferdowsi recieved no payment, and for 65 years while he was writing he was very poor also.. in the end of the Shahnama he talks about his pain and suffering, and how he was able to eat and live off the hands of a few people. But he was also vain.. his last words in the Shahnama are
chu een namwar nama amad ba bun
ze man roye keshwar shawad por sukhun
az aan pas namiram ke man zenda am
ke tukhme sukhan man paraganda am
har aan kas ke darad hosh o ray o deen
pas az marg bar man konad afareen

The first chapter of the gushtasp-nama talks about how Ferdowsi saw Daqiqi in a dream, who then told him.. "look bro, you should use my poetry in the Shahnama, because I has already written one thousand verses, and I couldnt write the Shahnama myself cause I was murdered by my Turkish servant." And when Ferdowsi woke up he realised this was the right thing to do. The saga continues.....
How Firdausi saw Daqiqi in a Dream
Thus was it that one night the poet (Ferdowsi) dreamed:-
He held a cup of wine whose fragrance seemed
Rosewater-like. Daqiqi from his stead
Appeared and, speaking of that wine-cup, said
Thus to Firdausi: "Quaff (drink) not save thou choose
The fashion of the days of Kai Kaus,
For he that is the monarch of thy choice,
In whom crown, throne, and fortune all rejoice,
Mahmud, the king of kings and conqueror,
Who giveth all a portion of his store (money and gold and stuff),
Shall from today for fourscore years and five (I dont know how many years this is lol)
Behold his travail wane, his treasury thrive,
Shall lead to China hereafter his array,
And every chief shall open for him the way.
He will not need to speak an angry word,
All crowns will come to him with one accord.
If over this story then hast somewhat striven
Now all that then didst wish to thee is given.
I too told somewhat of this history,
And if then findest it be kind to me.
I (Daqiqi, hes still talking) sang a thousand couplets of Gushtasp,
Before my day was done, and of Arjasp,
And if my work shall reach the king of kings
My soul will soar over sublunary things (the world)"
So now the verses that he wrote I give,
For he is gathered to the dust; I live.
